Caroline’s mother Christa was an American teacher and astronaut from Concord, New Hampshire, who died during the detonation of the space shuttle “Challenger” on the mission STS-51-L where she was serving as a payload specialist.
In the year 1966, she was graduated from Marian High School and then enrolled at Framingham State College and from there has received her bachelor’s degree in education and American history in the year 1970. During that time she was married to her high school sweetheart named, Steven J. McAuliffe and together also welcomed two children named, Caroline Corrigan and Scott Corrigan.
Later in the year 1978, she also got her master’s degree in education, supervision, and administration from Bowie State University. After completing her education in the year 1983 Christa took a teaching profession at Concord High School in New Hampshire, as a social studies teacher.
Then in 1985, Christa was selected from more than 11,000 applicants to participate in the NASA Teacher in Space Project. Vice President George H.W. Bush delivered the good news at a special ceremony at the White House and state that Christa was going to be the “first private citizen passenger in the history of space flight.”
As a member of mission STS-51-L, she was planning to conduct experiments and teach two lessons from the space shuttle, “Challenger”. Then on January 28, 1986, the space shuttle broke apart just after 1 minute 13 seconds of launch, killing seven crew members on board, when she was just 37 years old.
After her demise, schools and scholarships were named after her in her honor, and in the year 2004, she was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal.

After completing his graduation, from 1970 to 1973, Steven studied law at Georgetown University Law Center, receiving a Juris Doctor.
